Catering to dietary restrictions at a corporate BBQ
Not everyone eats meat... or dairy... or gluten... or nuts... the list goes on. But that doesn't mean you can't plan a fantastic BBQ event for your team.
Vegetarians and vegans
There are plenty of high-quality meat substitutes available in all shapes and sizes. Pick up some plant-based sausages, burgers and skewers for those who don't eat animal products.
Of course, there's also the option of delicious grilled veggie skewers - always a winner!
You'll also need to consider what side dishes, toppings and buns are bring used. Cheese on burgers will be a no-go for vegans, but plant-based cheeses are a great alternative. Brioche buns do contain egg, so you'll need to have a vegan-friendly bread option available.
Coeliacs and Gluten-free diets
Fortunately, there's no gluten in meat itself, but often marinades do contain it so you'll need to pay attention to the additional ingredients, recommends BeyondCeliac.org. For example, soy-based sauces and marinades usually contain gluten.
Lactose-free diets
Just like when you're avoiding gluten, it's about avoiding certain marinates and sauces than it is about avoiding the meat itself.
Milk or yogurt is sometimes used to marinade and tenderise meat, and cheese is a common topping on burgers. Avoiding both is super easy. Ensure you're ordering meats that aren't marinated with any dairy products and consider either a lactose-free or plant-based cheese as a topping!
Nut-free diets
It's best to double check the ingredients on any marinated items. Popular BBQ flavours like satay have sauces that are packed with peanuts.
Depending on the severity of the allergy, you'll want to make sure there's no cross-contamination on the grill too. If you've just got the one BBQ, it's a good idea to cook the nut-free items first to ensure there's no unwelcome surprises.
Everything to know before having a corporate BBQ in Australia
Must-haves put on a corporate BBQ menu
A barbecue is so much more than just juicy burgers and gourmet sausages. Don't forget to consider these important items ahead of your corporate BBQ.
- Meats: For feeding a group in bulk, cook up some sausages, burgers, chicken skewers or minute steaks. They're all generally quick to cook and are easy to eat on a bun or with your hands. If you have any attendees who keep Kosher or are Halal
- Vegetarian/vegan-friendly options: Consider brands like Beyond and Impossible, which offer vegan meat alternatives, or grill up some veggie skewers.
- Salads: Make it a well-rounded meal by pairing your proteins with some fresh salads, whether lettuce-based ones or BBQ favourites like pasta and potato salad.
- Sides and snacks: While your food is on the grill or for some pre-/post-BBQ nibbles, consider a few bowls of chips, veggies and dip, charcuterie boards and other easy-to-eat snack items.
- Desserts: Is it even a BBQ without some fresh, cool melon? Have a few fruit platters on hand and, if you have the means to keep it cold, some ice lollies can go a long way on a hot day.

My go-to: The classic Aussie BBQ
"If I'm having a get together with family or friends, it always has to be a barbeque. So why not do the same with your colleagues?
For me, the menu was always steak and snags, with onion of course, bathed in tomato sauce and a basic side salad with iceberg lettuce, cubed cheddar cheese, carrot, cucumber. French or Italian dressing straight from a bottle would alwyas be drizzled on top. It was always someone's job to bring the potato bake!
A trend that has now fallen in my lap as I attend dinners & bbqs. For starters there would be carrot sticks, celery, salads and biscuits to dip into French onion dip or an iconic Ccb loaf dip."
How much BBQ food do you need to cater per person?
We'd recommend one main meat item per person - so a steak or burger. The same would apply for plant-based meal items: one patty per person.
It's always a good idea to have some extra smaller items, like lamb cutlets, sausages or grilled skewers on hand for those with larger appetites. Of course, these can make great meals on their own. If that's your plan, aim for two to three smaller items per person.
Do you need to supply the BBQ?
Generally, yes, unless you're ordering pre-cooked food or if you're hiring a food truck as those come with cooking facilities onboard.
Is the price of a chef included?
Unfortunately not. If you're looking for. someone to cook the food fresh for you at your event, you will need to hire them for a few hours. It's usually offered by the same catering company supplying the food, but if it's not, we can help you out with a cook. (And include it all on one, easy, consolidated bill!)
